Google reader reporting subscribers

I recently noticed that the number of readers of my blog’s rss feed doubled. I did not write a ‘very popular’ post so I was surprised to see the big jump in the number of subscribers. Then I remembered the piece of news I remembered reading on on the the feeds I read on Google reader. GR (Google reader?) is reporting ’subscriber numbers’ in their logs. If there are people subscribed to your feed using GR; then feed reporting services (such as Feedburner) can report those numbers. That explains the 40 rss subscribers that I have got now.

YouTube videos in Google Video results

I noticed something very interesting this morning. Google has started showing YouTube results in its google video searches. If you search for a video at video.google.com; you will notice that the results contains videos from both Google and YouTube. As of now; there is no distinct way to tell if a video result if from Google or YouTube; other than by looking at the URL.

I guess the Google YouTube partnership is finally bearing fruit for the consumers.

Google rocks

Want to know why Google is kicking everyone’s butt in online advertising? Its because of the little things they do. I have set up a Google adwords account a few weeks ago to use it to promote my new site. Yesterday I received a welcome package from Google. It contained a little binder that explains, in plain english, how adwords work and how to efficiently use them. It also contained a $25 coupon that is activated after you take a ’short quiz’. The quiz is based on the facts that you learn by reading the little binder. I was able to get all 5 questions right; so I do not know if the coupon still works if you get it wrong. Anways; how nice is that? No wonder all the major publishers are going to Google for their advertising needs.

Firefox tip that everyone should know

One thing about being a geek is that you think that everyone knows the tips/tricks about software that you do. One of my favorite tips is to use the ‘keyword search’ feature in Firefox. It allows me to type in queries like: ‘yt shergill’ in the address bar and then search youtube for the word ’shergill’. I got another one for dictionary.com set to be ‘dict some word’. That way I can quickly get the definition of a word without actually going to dictionary.com first. Do you want to know how to set this up? Its pretty easy. Just go to the site that has a search feature. Lets go to google.com. Right-click in the search box and there should be an entry called ‘Add a Keyword for this search’. Go ahead and chose this. This will know pop up a dialog box. Type in Name: Google, Keyword: g and then click ‘ok’. Now you can type in ‘g apple’ in your address bar to search for ‘apple’ on google. Pretty sweet huh? :)

Microsoft scared of Google?

So I am sure that most of you know by now that Google bought YouTube for $1.65Billion (thats Billion with a B) yesterday. Not bad for a company that was started in Feb 2005 by a couple of geeks. The Dot Com era is back and is better than ever! Anyways; there are reports circulating that Microsoft was in the bidding war for YouTube, along with Yahoo. They lost yet again to Google. This morning I get a little email in my inbox from Microsoft Soapbox, Microsoft’s version of YouTube. It turns out that they have sent me a beta invite to try it out. I had signed up for it a few weeks ago. So it turns out they are opening it up to beta sooner than expected? Perhaps to counter the Goo-Tube behemoth!
