VPS

December 20th, 2007

You may ask.. what is VPS? Well; VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. In the web hosting world; you have three options.

  1. Shared Hosting - cheapest option (like $5 - $20/month)
  2. VPS - medium level option. Usually about $30 - $100/month
  3. Dedicated Server - anywhere from $100 - several hundred dollars a month.

For many personal sites; Shared hosting option just works fine. Your site is put on 1 physical server and you share resources with anywhere from 30 to 50 sites. This works fine; unless your site is very db/cpu intensive; in that case you are fighting with everyone for resources. Now a VPS is basically a virtual server; just like you use virtualization to install another OS on your home computer. You are still sharing resouces with other; but you have your own OS Image. You also have root access to your machine; meaning you can install anything you want. You can also shutdown/restart your VPS all you want. Its basically the best thing to do without paying all the money for a dedicated server. You are basically guaranteed a ‘dedicated share of resources’ that you to work with. This blog; along with my other sites; are all sitting on a VPS. I got it from Knownhost.com. So far my experience with them has been amazing. You can check out webhostingtalk.com for hundreds of positive reviews of them. All I would say is that if you are ready to move up to a VPS; you can’t go wrong with these guys.
