Ubuntu on VirtualPC
I’m sad to report that I will be uninstalling the VirtualPC installation that I did last week. I had installed Ubuntu under it; but it just ended up not working out too well. Ubuntu was pretty much useless under VirtualPC; even when I gave it 512mb dedicated Ram. I don’t know if it is the fault of VirtualPC or Ubuntu; but that whole configuration was not good. The only way to truly enjoy Ubuntu is to do a proper installation on a separate partition. I really want to try out beryl; but I need a better video card than my POS Radeon7500 from 4yrs ago..

Have you tried a “live” CD of Ubuntu to make sure the machine is suitable?
Ubuntu also recently started offering a .exe installation that allows you to install Ubuntu just as you would any program. You can then test it and if you don’t like, just use the add-remove Windows feature to kill it.
About a year ago I purchased a cheap PC from Fry’s and installed Ubuntu as a dual boot. Recently, I reinstalled on the machine and this time formatted the disk to remove Windows entirely. I never used it.
I used to have ubuntu installed on my machine on a separate partion. I had a p4 2.4ghz with 512mb at that point. Even then; the sticking point was my video card. It was not very well supported. I was never able to get a good resolution.
I think I just need to get a better video card.
