MIT vs Caltech - Fleming Cannon Heist
There has been an ongoing feud between Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and California Institute of Technology (CIT). Both of these prestigious universities want to be known as the best in the country when it comes to technology. In the latest US News and World report; these two were ranked equally (#7) in terms of best universities in America. Some would say that recently CIT has pulled ahead in terms of recognition and clout. Perhaps it has to do with their close proximity to Silicon Valley. Anyways; in the minds of the students; the winner is not decided by some magazine; it is determined by who has the best pranks. ![]()
This particular prank was pulled of by MIT. MIT pranksters posed as a moving company and stole the Fleming Cannon from the Pasadena campus last week. In broad daylight. he Fleming Cannon, a Caltech landmark, is fired to mark important events, such as the end of rotation, Ditch Day, the end of the year, and graduation. It is a thunderous noise that can be heard and felt all over campus. Well, now it is located about a few thousand miles away on the MIT campus.
The moving company was called “Howe & Ser Moving company”; a reference to the Howitzer cannon perhaps? Then the pranksters paid a real shipping company to tote it across the country. The funny thing is that the same prank was pulled 20 years ago, to the day by 11 Harvey Mudd students. There had been a rumor that it would be repeated 20yrs later to mark the anniversary. Maybe Caltech needs to invest in better security guards. Imagine just going up to the campus with fake work permits and walking away with the Fleming Cannon, what more can they have lost??
