I have always wanted to install linux on my computer. The main thing that was stopping me was the fact that I did not want to go through a ‘full’ install; meaning having to partition my hard drive and go through the pain of configuring each and every device. The last time I installed linux on my PC was back in 2001. That was not a fun experience; I was never able to it to recognize my video card!
Times sure have changed when it comes to linux install now. I have been hearing about this new trend of Live CD installs being offered by a lot of linux distributions. Without going into too many details; a Live CD allows you to ‘try out linux’ without installing anything on your hard drive. You basically download the image file, burn it on a CD and then boot from it. I chose Kubuntu version of linux to install. It is based on the KDE platform.
I downloaded the LiveCD using the bit torrent option available from Kubuntu. It is about a 650mb download; so plan ahead. After downloading it; I burned it as a ‘boot cd’ using Nero. The next step was to reboot the PC and just wait for Kubuntu to load. Please keep in mind that it will take a while for the actual desktop screen to load up since the system is being loaded from the CD. You don’t have to do anything during the install; so just go take a 5 minute break after the load process starts. Eventually; you will be presented with a desktop .
The best thing about the whole install is that everything just works. It recognized my keyboard, mouse, internet connection, audio.. everything! Infact; I am writing this post from within Kubuntu right now. Its getting pretty late and night; so I will just leave you with a couple of screenshots of my brand spanking new linux install. Gotta love the clean look of a new desktop
